Henry invited us to his small Calvary Chapel church in Kajjansi on Sunday where we were surprised to learn that he was preaching that day. We were not, however, surprised given his oratory skills. Henry is a wonderful story teller and easily exhorts even the most unmotivated person to action.
His message was based on James 2:10, “Bl
essed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him” (NIV). And with that, James 2:2-3, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”
Verse 11 is where I spent most of my pondering moments, “nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.” God doesn’t tempt us, he because he cannot be tempted (James 2: 13). Does this mean the same thing regarding trials? God does not try us because he cannot be tried. Somehow the text switches from trials to temptation and each term has as slightly different meaning.
I am of the view that God does not test/tempt/try us but the world and our own evil desires do that as a result of sin. What results from those tests/trials/temptations is perseverance so that we may receive the crown of life. What do you think?
